To make the most of your day, we recommend starting early. Luckily, Enchanted Rock State Natural Area opens at 6:30 am, which means you can enjoy a sunrise hike.
Even if you aren’t a morning person, the dawn break over the massive granite formations will surely change your mind. The cooler morning hours are ideal for hiking, and the views are breathtaking. It is the perfect magical way to start your day.
What is Enchanted Rock?
The park’s namesake is a massive pink granite dome that dominates the surrounding landscape. The dome is just part of a larger underground formation called a batholith, which formed from slowly cooling, molten rock deep beneath the Earth’s surface.
Over millions of years, erosion removed layers of rock surrounding the formation, resulting in the characteristic dome (and the rest of the rugged scenery) we see today.
Take The Summit Trail
If you want to watch the sunrise from the top of the dome, The Summit Trail is the fastest way to get there.
The trail is approximately 0.8 miles each way and climbs about 425 feet to the top of the dome. While the trail is short, the climb is steep, and the exposed granite slabs make this a challenging hike. But it’s well worth the view. At the summit, you'll find 360-degree views of the Texas Hill Country.
Beyond the Summit
If you're looking for something beyond the Summit Trail, the park offers nearly 21 miles of trails. Shorter walks, scenic overlooks, rock formations, and opportunities for wildlife viewing give you plenty of ways to enjoy the park without climbing to the summit.

What to know before you go
- Pet Restrictions:
Pets are only allowed on the Loop Trail. They
must be leashed, on a leash no longer than 6 feet, at all times.
- Reserve your day pass: Though not as common in the early morning, the park often reaches capacity on weekends and holidays.
- Bring a Flashlight: If you are planning on a sunrise hike, bring a flashlight as the trails will be dark.
- Wear sturdy shoes: You'll be walking across uneven ground and granite surfaces.
- Bring plenty of water: Mornings may be cooler, but the hike is still steep. Make sure you stay hydrated
- Check conditions before leaving. Weather and trail conditions can affect access, so check current park alerts before your visit.
